Tyna Ek
Tyna Ek is a Seattle native and graduated magna cum laude from Gonzaga University in 1981. She received her J.D. from the University of Washington in 1984 with honors, where she was Notes and Comments Editor for the Washington Law Review. She is admitted to practice in all state and federal courts within Washington, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. Ms. Ek’s practice primarily focuses on civil litigation, including insurance coverage and bad faith litigation, medical and legal malpractice defense, toxic tort coverage and defense, catastrophic personal injury defense, and appellate work in these same subject areas. Her extensive insurance coverage experience includes environmental and mold coverage, first and third-party coverage, personal and commercial lines, and complex re-insurance litigation.
Ms. Ek is a frequent author and lecturer on professional ethics, evidence, malpractice defense, trial skills and tactics. She taught Evidence for the Bar-Bri bar review program at all three Washington law schools for more than 10 years, and has lectured and published on various evidence topics within Washington and nationally. As the former chair of the Washington State Bar Association Rules of Professional Conduct Committee, and as a consequence of having defended attorneys in legal negligence actions for 20 years, Ms. Ek is frequently asked to speak at seminars concerning legal and professional ethics. Through three independent peer review processes, Ms. Ek was honored for her legal abilities in the following publications in 2007: listed in “The Best Lawyers in America;” recognized as a “Washington Superlawyer” in Washington Law & Politics magazine; listed in Seattle Metropolitan magazine as one of “Seattle’s Best Lawyers 2007.”
Ms. Ek has dedicated much of her free time throughout her career to juvenile programs designed to protect youth and/or intervene when they first enter the juvenile justice system. She has served as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (“CASA”), hears and decides juvenile criminal cases as part of the Partnership for Youth Justice Program, and has served on various judicial advisory boards, including chairing the King County court’s advisory board for all volunteer programs for juveniles.
When Ms. Ek isn’t in court or forwarding some political or social cause, she greatly enjoys playing her piano, hiking, backpacking, writing, gourmet cooking, and adventurous travel.
